Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and it seems that I always wait until the last minute to decorate. I have always been interested in the art of macrame and have never done any macrame crafts until now! I decided I wanted to tackle a couple simple Valentine macrame craft ideas. I chose these easy macrame patterns that use simple macrame knots that is a great beginner macrame project.

Supplies for Valentine Macrame Crafts
- Macrame cord in a variety of colors
- Wooden dowel
- Scissors
- Fabric Glue
- Felt sheets in the same or similar colors of the macrame yarn
To start my very first project I did a little research online about macrame knots and watched several YouTube videos to help me prepare. Because I wanted to create hearts from the macrame I followed a pattern that was intended for making a macrame feather or leaf. My idea was to basically create the leaf but when cutting it I would do a heart shape instead of the leaf shape. The leaf pattern is actually one of the most basic macrame knots to learn so I think this is a great beginner project.

I chose to create my macrame hearts in four different colors: white, light pink, hot pink and burgundy. To begin making the heart you will tie a length of macrame cotton cord onto the wood dowel that the design will hang from. This macrame cord length should be the length that you want the heart to hang from.

The first heart that I created was 18″ in length (so 36″ total since you fold the cord in half) for the base cord and then each of the other lengths were 12″ (again you will fold them in half). In order to “knot” the macrame you will fold two of the shorter cords in half and the loops of each end will lay over the base cord. You will then grab the ends of the opposite cord and create a knot over the base cord. This pattern will continue down the length of the base cord until you get to the length you desire for your heart.

I chose to tape the dowel to the table so that it didn’t move as I tied on the macrame cords and tightened them down.

After tying the cord to the desired length the next step is to brush the cord out so that it creates that feather look. The best way to do this is to use a pet brush, it will take a little bit to do this without tearing the knots loose. Just make sure you start at the ends and work your way up to the base of the knot.

Once all the cord has been brushed you can use a very sharp scissors to cut the brushed cord into the shape of a heart. At this time you can also tie a knot at the base of the heart so that all the tied knots stay in place.

Once both sides of the heart were cut I continued on and created three other hearts using the other colors of macrame and created several different sizes.

After creating all four hearts I realized that once hung the hearts will not keep their shape and so therefore needed some extra support. After researching online I found out that felt sheets close to the color of the macrame cord is best to use. As you can see from the picture below the hearts became all jumbled once I tried to hang it.

I found four felt sheets that were close enough in color to the cord color and then traced around the shape with a fabric pen and cut out the felt and then used fabric glue to apply the felt to the heart.

If there as any felt overhanging (like in the photo below) I re-cut the heart so that the felt and the macrame cord lined up and were not as noticeable.

This was such a fun first time macrame craft project to create. It definitely makes me want to create more simple macrame projects and try different knots and styles. And now that I have most of the basic macrame supplies it will be easy to create a variety of simple projects that I can give a personal touch. I also love that macrame cord can be used for making all sorts of items including macrame plant hangers, friendship bracelets, macrame garland or even a macrame table runner.
