Have you been wondering if farmhouse home decor is still a thing? This home decor trend became popular around 2015 with the world’s introduction to Chip & Joanna Gaines and their hit TV show Fixer Upper. But are you wondering what exactly defines farmhouse home decor? And what if you still do like farmhouse home decor? Let’s take a deep dive into this home decor trend.
As I mentioned above this decor trend became very popular thanks to Chip & Joanna. Some of the major aspects of farmhouse style are neutral colors, subway tiles, white and shades of white (countertops/cabinets), greenery accents, wood accents and of course shiplap. Some of the minor accents that define farmhouse are rustic looking wood signs, mason jars, jute rugs and distressed furniture.

Major Aspects of Farmhouse Home Decor
Neutral colors are a big part of farmhouse home decor. However I don’t believe this is just limited to farmhouse style decor. A neutral color palette also fits in with modern decor, minimalist and traditional. The neutral colors in my mind are whites, greys, beige, cream and off-white. Of these neutrals white is the classic neutral as it is able to be used in a variety of different ways and can also help make a space feel large and airy.

Another reason neutral tones are used widely in all forms of home decor is due to the timelessness, neutrals are less likely to go out of style. Neutrals are versatile as they can be used for different looks, such as a calming and relaxing space or could be used in a sophisticated and modern space.
Another major aspect of farmhouse home decor is shiplap walls. Of all the aesthetics that Joanna Gaines showed this was the most popular in my opinion. This look started to be everywhere, on all the walls! We even did this look in our house, although for our house it was the original shiplap when the house was built in 1905. This accent is still added to houses today and although the style has seemed to wane in the last several years I still think it can be a nice addition to any room.
Farmhouse Textiles and Patterns
Farmhouse textiles are very popular in home decor and design. These textiles include linen, cotton and wool. These are desired for their simple, rustic and timeless aesthetic. Most of the time these textiles blend in well with earth tones and a neutral color pallete.

The farmhouse patterns that are popular are considered to be stripes, checks, ginghams and florals. When I think of stripes I like to think of flour sack towels with a distinctive red or blue line. Checks and ginghams to me are very similar, when thinking of checks I think of buffalo plaid in either red or black. Ginghams are a smaller square pattern that comes in all colors with most popular being red, blue and black. Many farmhouse style fabric have clean lines and a classic style. I like to create this look with throw pillows.

Farmhouse Style Home Decor Accents
Most people don’t live in an actual farmhouse so if you love farmhouse style the goal is to create a farmhouse feel with accents. Farmhouse style can be added to builder grade homes, apartments and of course the traditional farmhouse. When adding accents to create the farmhouse style it usually includes wood, metal and glass. The trend is moving towards authentic items such as antiques and vintage pieces. I have a mix of natural elements (distressed wood) and modern farmhouse style (tobacco baskets, ceramic vases) in our home and like to change up the decor multiple times for each season.

Some other popular farmhouse style accents are mason jars, wood signs, pottery, rugs and brass hardware. Some of these items can be found at thrift stores, flea markets or antique stores. When looking for rugs for your farmhouse style I like the jute style rugs and I am a huge fan of Ruggable rugs.
Farmhouse Architectural Detail
There are many architectural details that can describe the modern farmhouse trend and traditional farmhouse. The first is barn doors that made an appearance in many homes the last several years. Barn doors can be used in multiple areas such as a pantry door, closet door, or even bedroom doors. Because these door slide instead of opening they are very popular in small spaces.

Farmhouse sinks have also become very popular as a modern farmhouse trend. These sinks with the apron front come in a variety of finishes. These style of sinks originated in the 17th century and have a timeless style. I currently don’t have a farmhouse sink but when we remodel our kitchen there will be one on my wish list!
Light fixtures are also a key element in modern farmhouse design. The most popular light fixtures are barn lighting, schoolhouse lights, or anything with wood or metal. Metal accents are actually popular in industrial farmhouse style. In addition to lighting you can find metal accents used on vintage bed frames, kitchen faucets or cabinet knobs.
Create a Home You Love
The most important part of your home decor is that YOU LOVE IT! We spend a lot of time in our homes and we should love the space we live in. We should create the space we live in for us to enjoy and not for anyone else. If you love farmhouse style it doesn’t matter if it is “popular” because if you enjoy it then that is all that is important.
