There is nothing better than sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner and diving in to Grandma’s traditional stuffing. My Grandma Juanita is no longer with us but every year I still request that my mom make her mom’s traditional stuffing recipe. It brings a sense of nostalgia to the meal every year and I would never want to have another stuffing recipe. I do have my own version of this recipe written down by myself when I asked my Grandma one year but she just told me the ingredients, she never measured and would just eyeball it. My mom did not have the exact measurements of ingredients either but has made it enough times that I now can share it with y’all.
Recipe Instructions
We start with dry, cubed bread for the main part of the stuffing. Then we need to chop up an onion and several sticks of celery.
Once the vegetables are chopped, pour the chicken stock into a stockpot and add the vegetables and butter and bring to a low boil. This helps to soften the vegetables.

One of my favorite parts of Grandma’s stuffing is that she would add pork sausage and hamburger (which in my opinion makes it taste amazing!) so the next step is to brown the pork sausage and hamburger and then set it aside. She also added in the gizzards from the turkey however in this recipe I have omitted them as my mom never liked that my Grandma added them. The reason to add the hamburger is because the pork sausage alone can make the dressing very greasy.

Then pour the stuffing cubes into a large bowl and then add in the spices and meat and combine. Then slowly drizzle the chicken stock mixture over the cubes and stir until moistened. . If the mixture seems a little dry add some additional chicken stock to help moisten to the consistency that you prefer.

After all the ingredients are combined you will want to pour into a prepared pan. Because all of us love Grandma’s stuffing so much we bake this in a roasting pan as it won’t all fit in a 9×12. If that is all you have you can split this between 2 different pans if needed.

Once assembled, cover with tin foil and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

This recipe is very similar to my grandfather’s recipe. The big difference is that in his you cook the meat (boil) in the broth. It adds more flavor. It also calls for fresh herbs, though I converted them to dried.
