The time of year of red, pink and purple is upon us. I have a always loved decorating simply for most holidays by adding little trinkets here and there. But I realized that I don’t have any type of decor for the front door area of our front porch. So that is why I decided to create a DIY Valentine door hanger with mesh vinyl stencils.

Supplies Needed for DIY Valentine Door Hanger
The mesh stencils that I like to use are from Magnolia Design Company, they are easy to use and the best part is that they are reusable after a rinse with some water. But the first step will be to paint your wood round in the background color that you choose. I wanted my background color to be white so I painted two coats of white paint on the wood round and let it dry.
The next step is to apply can the mesh stencil. When a stencil is brand new you will want to “remove” some of the stickiness before applying to your surface. The reason for this is because if you don’t “remove” some of the stickiness it will stick too much to the surface and then be hard for you to pull it off. So in order to remove this stickiness you peel the stencil off the backing and then lay it on a towel and pull it off several times.

Now we are ready to use the stencil! I like to use my Cricut scraper tool to make sure there are no air bubbles left in the stencil before applying the paint. Using a foam brush loaded with the paint color you apply this over the area you want painted. When using mesh stencils you want to make sure the brush is not too overloaded with paint as this could cause the paint to leak through the design.

Once you have the design painted you will slowly peel back the stencil and then I like to immediately rinse the stencil with water and then lay flat to dry on a towel.

After the first part of the design is painted you will want to wait for this to dry before you paint the second part, this will ensure that the first design does not get smeared.

I also hot-glued a small piece of white ribbon as a hanger on the back too.

If I were to make this again, next time I think I might paint the background with different colors, either pink or red and then do the writing and hearts in white or pink. It would also be cute to use a heart shape wood cutout for the base instead of a circle.

Now I have a great Valentine decoration that didn’t cost too much money and that was a fun way to add some seasonal decor on our covered front porch.
