As I have aged I have found myself attracted to the idea of a more simpler holiday season with my family. I have always been drawn to the old world Christmas celebrations, with handmade ornaments, candy canes and the nostalgia of Christmas pasts. We have a large amount of empty egg cartons and I decided to create a fun and easy egg carton Christmas ornament.

Supplies Needed for DIY Egg Carton Christmas Ornament
- egg carton
- acrylic paint (in a color of your choice)
- ribbon
- 1-inch jingle bells
- holiday greenery
When creating this ornament I decided to create a set of bells since the egg carton cups are shaped like a bell. So the first step will be to cup two of the egg cups and trim so they are about the same size.

Then it is time to paint the “bells” I like to use acrylic paint and chose red and gold but you can use any color that you like. This project is simple enough that even younger children would love to DIY these ornaments. I would suggest adult supervision if the children need help with cutting the egg cartons.

Once they are painted and dried you will want to cut a piece of ribbon about 3 inches in length. Using a scissors you will want to create a small hole in the top of each of the egg cups since this will be the top of the “bell.”

The ribbon will then be threaded through the top of each hole in the egg cup. The ribbon will then be tied to the top of each bell so that when you pull the ribbons to create a loop the jingle bells will be hidden inside the “bell.”

This loop you create will be how you hang the ornament from your Christmas tree.

Now in order to add a little more decoration to the ornament I added on some Christmas floral with a glue gun. And also using the glue gun I placed a small amount of hot glue between the bells to keep them together when hanging. Your ornament is now ready to hang!

Some other suggestions for variations to this would be to add glitter accents with glue on the bells instead of florals, or use a black sharpie to add a pattern to the bells.
