Supplies Needed for DIY Cake Stands
- Assortment of plates, bowls and/or drink glasses
- Ceramic glue
The first step is to head to your local thrift store or garage sales to find any variety of plates and bowls and any type of candlestick holder, small glass cups or candle holder. When I went around the thrift store I would experiment with different glasses on the bottom of plates to act as the stand. These supplies could also be found at any dollar store if you want a tiered tray that has a more uniform look.

After I found the dishes that I wanted I brought them home and ran them all through the dishwasher to give them a through cleaning. Before I went to glue the pieces together I needed to make sure all the stickers from the bottom of the plates were removed. In order to properly remove these I used a scraper and Goo Gone spray,

The next step once you have all the glasses cleaned and ready to become a cake plate you will want to turn the plates upside down and line up the base glasses that you will be using.

Using ceramic glue apply a thin line around the area that the glasses meet and then leave it to sit for 6-12 hours so that it can dry properly. The nice thing about the ceramic glue is that it is waterproof which means if you need to wash your cake stand you can.

These DIY cake plates would make a great addition to a baby shower or wedding shower or even a Sunday brunch.

In addition to making an easy cake stand you could also create a tiered tray by stacking several plates.

DIY cake plates are one of those projects that prove the prettiest details don’t have to come with a big price tag. With just a few simple supplies and a little creativity, you can create custom stands that match your style, your party theme, or your everyday kitchen decor. Whether you’re dressing up a dessert table or adding charm to your countertop, these handmade pieces bring personality that store-bought versions just can’t match. Once you make one, don’t be surprised if you start looking at every thrifted plate and candlestick as your next cake stand in the making.
