Houseplants usually start with one and then they seem to multiply as once you have one you need to have many! I have about a dozen or so houseplants with several cuttings of these plants that I am trying to propagate. One type of houseplant that I have always been intrigued with but have never owned is air plants. So I decided I wanted to buy some and create a DIY air plant display. This unique way to display air plants can be completed in several easy steps and is a fun project to complete in an afternoon.

Supplies Needed for DIY Air Plant Display
- Air plants
- Craft wire
- Driftwood piece or any piece of a log would work
- Sandpaper-fine grit
- Wire Cutter
- Pliers
The first step in the project was to figure out how to display the air plants correctly. The benefits of air plants are that they are one of the best low-maintenance plants that do not need soil to survive and can just sit on a shelf. Air plants only need water every 7-10 days and this is done via a soak once a week for about 20-30 minutes. They could also be watered using a spray bottle as needed. Air plants do not have roots like other plants and absorb their nutrients through their leaves.

Most air plants that you find come in sets, you can always just buy one at a time but I feel that a set is the best thing for any type of air plant display. Air plants are an inexpensive houseplant and as mentioned before extremely low maintenance. The species of air plants that I purchased are Tillandsia Mexican air plants,
In my research about air plants I found that air plants need to be displayed in a bright area where they can receive light but indirectly. If they are kept in direct sunlight the air plants will dry out and shrivel up.
I collected this piece of driftwood on a trip to the Oregon Coast in January as it seemed to be the perfect piece of nature for some type of craft or DIY and now this project has given me the perfect solution.

Because I am an avid crafter I have a large stash of craft supplies and also several rolls of craft wire. Although any type of craft wire would work or even copper wire would look great.

The piece of driftwood has dried out nicely but still has sand in the cracks and is a little rough on the surface, I took a fine grit sandpaper to the driftwood piece so that it would be smooth. In addition I took a can of air to make sure no wood or sand particles remained.
After prepping the wood surface I took the craft wire and some pliers and wrapped the wire around the wood several times and then created a funnel shape at the top for the air plant to be displayed. I created five different wire displays at varying heights on the driftwood piece.

The natural look of the driftwood blends nicely with the rustic home decor that I have in my home.

If this DIY air plant display is not something that you feel would fit with your decor there are several other options for displaying air plants are glass terrariums, a macrame hanger, or as I mentioned above displaying on a shelf with no designated holder.
I can see air plants becoming my new favorite collectible! There are many creative ways to display air plants and many different shapes that air plants come. I think I may need some new air plants to display on our dining table as a stunning tablescape or even as a stunning air plant wall display.
