When we started refinishing the living and dining room floors I was also in the process of removing the wallpaper from the wall in the dining room. There was also a chair rail trim that was half way down the wall that we ended up removing as well. This is the best wallpaper removal solution that kept coming up over and over when I searched Pinterest and Google and I am sure some of you may have heard before: FABRIC SOFTENER!
Materials Needed for Wallpaper Removal
- Putty knife
- Spray bottle
- Fabric Softener (any brand will do)
- Sponge
- Bucket for washing walls
After scraping off as much wallpaper as I could using a putty knife. I mixed about 1/3 cup of fabric softener with water in a spray bottle and liberally covered the walls. I let the solution sit for about 5 minutes and then the wallpaper seemed to fall off the wall like butter!

PROGRESS:

Once all the wallpaper was off and the floors completed I did a thorough washing of the walls due to fabric softener residue and the dust from the sanding of the floors. I washed the walls with a big sponge and soapy water. The benefit of the fabric softener is that it makes the room smell very fresh and clean!
After the floors were done we laid down old sheets and painted the walls and trim. In the dining room, I used Behr’s Mortar. This color was on the same paint card as the color in the living room, this was just the lighter shade. I went with a lighter shade because the dining room lacks as much natural light as the living room. We actually hope someday to change out the front door there to a window (more on that later!)
