Backyard barbecues at Grandma’s house back in the 90’s always included wicker/basket paper plate holders. Imagine my nostalgic joy when I found some at my Uncle’s house during a clean out day. I took the stack of baskets and they sat in our shop for over a year. But now is the time to use them in a new fun way! I’ve seen basket displays all over Pinterest and decided I wanted to tackle my own basket wall DIY. I hope this inspires you to create your own basket wall!

Supplies Needed for Basket Wall DIY
- Baskets of various sizes and shapes (either from a thrift store or you can buy some)
- Acrylic paints
- Penny nails
- Painter’s tape
As I mentioned above these paper plate holder baskets had been sitting in our shop for over a year. The baskets were dusty and covered with cobwebs so I brought them in the house and cleaned them off with warm water and a light scrubbing and then let them air dry.
Because all these paper plate holder baskets are the same size and I wanted to create a display that had dimension I went to the thrift store and found a couple other flat baskets so that I could incorporate baskets of different shapes into the mix. When choosing the thrift store baskets I chose ones with a unique look, were different sizes and those that had other colors incorporated. Yard sales would also be a good place to look for baskets or these paper plate holders.

The first step of this DIY project was to add some visual interest to the baskets. And because all these wicker baskets are the same color I wanted to add some different styles to make the display more interesting. So I pulled out my paints and decided to paint patterns on each basket using several colors.

I wanted the patterns to blend in with the decor in our house so I stuck with several neutral colors of black and white. I didn’t have a plan when I started painting the patterns, I just wanted to paint patterns that I liked which tend towards flower petal shapes, circles and lines. Because I wanted clean lines I used painter’s tape to draw out the designs that involved straight lines. Some of the paint colors needed several coats.
Before attaching the baskets to the wall I laid out the baskets on my dining room table in different ways to find out the layout of the baskets that I liked best. I decided that this display was going to go on the wall of our dining room. There is a wall in our dining room that is a large wall that I like to change up the decor frequently for each season. Also when laying out this design I chose an odd number of baskets to display as one of the most popular decorating rules is to use odd numbers in your displays as it is more visually appealing.

Once I had my ideal layout I hammered penny nails (or you could use small finishing nails) into the wall and then hung the baskets on the nails through the woven holes in the baskets. I made sure to hang several of the small baskets at eye level so that it wasn’t hung too high. I like that this type of gallery wall gives the room a boho vibe. I hung this in my house during January but would look good anytime of year. I was just looking for something to fill this empty wall after the holiday decor had been taken down.

This type of basket wall decor would also look great in a living room, primary (formerly known as master) bedroom or really in any room of your home. This basket gallery wall allows you to use creative ways to update your home decor with minimal effort.

If you don’t want to scour local thrift stores or yard sales you could also buy different decorative baskets from any online or home good store. However this would be an extra cost and if you are anything like me I like to complete projects the affordable way.
